Beethoven’s string quartet Op. 74 was written against a backdrop of tremendous drama and upheaval in his personal life, all while Vienna was under siege by Napoleon, forcing Beethoven to hunker down in a basement to avoid the shelling. Responding to criticism of his three previous quartets, Beethoven set out to win back supporters by making the quartet Op. 74 as ‘likeable’ as possible. Through stories and performance, Artistic Director Michael Adams and the Pavone Quartet will illustrate why this quartet was an immediate success – and why it’s nicknamed “Harp”.
Audiences will have exclusive access to Faust’s tank room for this private event. Wine and appetizer reception to follow in the plaza.
