Dan Smith was appointed Associate Principal Bass of the San Francisco Symphony in 2017 by Michael Tilson Thomas. He previously served as Principal Bass of the Santa Barbara Symphony while concurrently performing as a member of the San Diego Symphony. During his time in Southern California, he also appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Pacific Symphony.
Though he relishes the power and camaraderie of a full orchestral bass section, Smith actively pursues intimate chamber music collaborations. Highlights include performances with the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Mainly Mozart Festival, and guest principal engagements with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Smith holds a Bachelor of Music from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with Timothy Pitts. This is his first appearance with Music in the Vineyards.
