Next year marks an important milestone for our chamber music festival as our 20th Anniversary season! We're inspired as we look back on 20 years of musical memories in the Napa Valley, and we're gearing up for a season of performances that are sure to be remembered for another 20 years to come.
We're starting a week early to stretch the anniversary festivities beyond our normal 3-week festival. We'll kick-off on Friday, August 1st for a weekend of concerts and an opening midsummer gala on Saturday, August 2nd featuring the music of Mendelssohn and Mozart. The following Saturday (August 9th) will feature a performance by four-time Grammy award-winning soprano, Dawn Upshaw, who was described by the Los Angeles Times as "one of the most consequential performers of our time." The concert will feature a new arrangement for string quartet of Maria Shneider’s, Carlos Drummond de Andrade Stories, written specifically for Upshaw and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in 2013. Schneider, whose music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization,” will give a pre-concert talk on her newly commissioned work.
Our 2014 season will also feature 20+ award-winning artists-in-residence including long-time festival favorites the Pacifica Quartet, the vibrant Escher Quartet, virtuosic clarinetist Burt Hara of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and internationally renowned violist and CEO of the Curtis Institute, Roberto Diaz. Program specifics are still underway, but included will be a presentation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations in its popular arrangement for String Trio, and “A Four Seasons Finale: Vivaldi meets the Tango” by Astor Piazzolla.
Stay tuned for more details, venue announcements, and artistic tidbits as we prepare for this monumental anniversary season. We're excited to celebrate 20 years of Music in the Vineyards, and hope you'll join us for the festivities!
